<p>I started work at Google Thailand, as Industry Manager, 8 years ago. Over the years, I've had a chance to meet many people and clients, to understand Digital Transformation, and enter the world of digital marketing. 2 years ago, I was invited to become Country Head of Google Thailand.</p>
<p>Google Thailand's mission is to "Leave No Thai Behind", ensuring that we help all Thai people.</p>
<p>We're walking out of the pandemic and entering the endemic era. What we can learn from this crisis is that it has presented an opportunity to learn and adapt ourselves to how the future of work will be.</p>
<h2>Hybrid Workplace Success<br />It's not about where you work, it's about how!</h2>
<p><strong>Hello. I'm Jackie Wang, Country Director of Google Thailand.</strong></p>
<p>It&rsquo;s getting clearer that the future of work is hybrid but what does "hybrid" mean?</p>
<p>Hybrid work is neither working just in the office, nor is it working just at home. What we lack when working from home is the element of magic that is human interaction; building connectivity between people and building connections that go beyond how we can achieve goals together.</p>
<p>These are very important things. But how do we build relationships? This is an unplanned conversation, a spontaneous conversation. I think it's the Magic Source of innovation that drives creativity, both of which are very important elements. It&rsquo;s not that conversations like these can&rsquo;t happen when we&rsquo;re working from home but being together adds something else. Face-to-face connection is still very important.</p>
<p>When we were working from home, we realized the importance of &ldquo;focus time&rdquo;. It is useful and has many advantages. Some think working from home is more productive because there are fewer distractions and less people to disturb you. You can focus on work and spend more time with the people and things that are meaningful and important in your life.</p>
<p>They're in a place where the company listens to them, gives them what they want, accepts them for who they are, and provides for their special needs. We have options for them to choose so they can better focus on their work.</p>
<p>So how can we bring the best of both worlds together?</p>
<h2>The Hybrid Workplace Concept</h2>
<p>There are 3 components that are fundamental to successful hybrid work.</p>
<p>The first element is how technology helps people connect and drive connectivity and productivity.</p>
<p>Another element is people. With people, there is the behavior standard called &ldquo;norm&rdquo; and everyone needs to be aligned with this.</p>
<p>At the heart of "People" there has to be a sharp focus on diversity and inclusion. This is about creating a corporate culture in which everyone feels they belong. The sense of belonging is dependent on many factors such as creating an environment where everyone feels confident and can be themselves, in the office or at home. Both staff members and the organization they work for must have the opportunity to be heard.</p>
<p>The last component is "workplace". How we design our office or workplace needs to be re-thought so that it's suitable for hybrid work. Having understood about social distancing, designs need to consider the overall floor plan and layout; how tables are positioned. Outdoor space could be factored in and better ventilation.</p>
<p>These become elements of the norm that everyone is aligned with. So the workplace itself is another element to think about and adjust.</p>
<h2>Elements of the Hybrid Working Model</h2>

<h2>The Pros &amp; Cons of Hybrid Work</h2>
<p>I see more Pros than Cons in many ways. Hybrid work increases flexibility for your staff members. Also companies have realized that there are more diverse ways to work.</p>
<p>Hybrid work can increase productivity in people who want focus time. They are able to spend more time on what they need to complete. So when they are not in the office, it can be an advantage, a benefit to the company as well. Such employees see that their company trusts them, respects them and gives them what they want. They will focus more on their work.</p>
<p>Moving to the Cons, the main Con is that it's all new and when something is new it's full of unknowns. But this can be a Pro or a Con. What's unseen has an element of excitement. And we can create it together. We can build it together.</p>
<h2>5 Keys for the Future of Work</h2>
<p>I would like to share 5 key takeaways based on how I see work or future of work and key points for you to takeaway.</p>
<h3>1. Turn Crisis into Opportunity</h3>
<p>First, every crisis is an opportunity to learn and improve the organization, the way of working and the approach used to adjust organizations or ways of working. There are 2-3 things.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do Not Work as a Single Unit</strong><br />First, involve people from different departments. Do not work as a single unit. Bring people together from many units so that you have a diverse point of view and detailed knowledge to solve the problem.</li>
<li><strong>Use Data to Understand Employees</strong><br />Secondly, we should take a holistic approach taking data points from different sources; data we collect or data derived from a survey To understand our people, team and employees: What is it that they want to tell us? Do they need a vacation? What do they need? We can use this information to adjust benefits.</li>
<li><strong>Use Technology as a Tool</strong><br />Thirdly, use technology to help solve problems, to create a new environment, or to unlock unexpected opportunities.</li>
</ul>
<h3>2. Create a Connected Culture</h3>
<p>Point 2 is about connection. Although not in the office together, staff need to feel connected to the organization and team. It's what keeps them going in a crisis, when they have to stay home. So to build a stronger connection, the team or organization has to have clear goals. We have to create a culture of teaching and learning at the same time.</p>
<h3>3. Add Flexibility to Work</h3>
<p>Third, the future of work is flexible. To move forward to the hybrid model, the organization or leader must promote flexibility among our team and employees. They will have the work-from-anywhere week. That's how we promote flexibility among employees. Let them plan their lives, where and how to spend time.</p>
<h3>4. Focus on Employee Wellbeing</h3>
<p>Fourth, focus on employee wellbeing. In the past two years, mental wellbeing awareness has increased. We have seen many more people searching for information on overcoming "depression".</p>
<p>Burn out rates have increased. This is one of the learnings we can use to discover how we can better support our employees. As an organization and a leader, I can see 2 parts. First, what benefits the organization can give them like extra holidays. Google has Global reset days to give everyone a break and detach from work.</p>
<p>Another area of culture we can adjust to improve staff wellbeing is to build a sense of belonging in our team so members feel glad to work here. They will have a strong supporting network and be able to share their problems whilst feeling safe to talk about them, and being themselves.</p>
<h3>5. Adapt to Change and Never Stop Learning</h3>
<p>Fifth, it's continuous learning and having a mindset that's eager to learn.</p>
<p>The future world is full of uncertainty so we need more flexible skills, to be able to adapt faster and to have resilience. Having a mindset of continual learning is vital to our employees at an individual level, as well as at organization and country level.</p>
<p>I want to encourage everyone to develop a growth mindset. Look at where you need to upskill, or digital skills you don't yet have, or areas where you need reskilling.</p>
<h2>The Future of Work is Here</h2>
<p>The Future of work. I think it's here. Most of you are working in the hybrid model. So if the future of work is hybrid, I think we are in the future right now. But it's just the beginning. We've seen how it looks, know how to form it but I think it's still not perfect. I'd like to invite you all to this experiment to learn together what the future of work will be like.</p>

<p>Jackie Wang became the first female Country Director of Google Thailand when she was promoted in 2019. In her role, she is responsible for overseeing Google&rsquo;s sales and business development operations in the country.</p>
<p>Her career with Google began in 2014, initially as part of the sales team in Thailand before spending a year in the US where she worked as a brand manager for key products like Nest Thermostat and Nest Cam. On returning, she was Industry Head of Google Thailand, looking after Auto and CPG clients, before her promotion in 2019 to Country Director.</p>
<p>Jackie took on the leadership mantle just as the global pandemic was about to take hold. Under her leadership, usage of Google services in Thailand increased dramatically. For example, in the first half of 2020, YouTube watch time in Thailand grew by 20% over the same period during the previous year.</p>
<p>Leading Google Thailand through the pandemic minefield, Jackie was quoted to say &ldquo;Since the virus first began to spread, our focus at Google has been on making sure people have the information and tools they need&rdquo;. Jackie set goals for Google Thailand in response to the pandemic designed to support a sustainable recovery:</p>
<ol>
<li>Promote Authoritative and Reliable Information</li>
<li>Support Education and Learning</li>
<li>Contribute to Business Continuity and Economic Recovery</li>
</ol>
<p>Through the pandemic, she led her team to forge close relationships with government, health and education sectors, nonprofit and community organizations and business. While Google Thailand had existing and established partnerships and programmes, she was keen that they would be there to quickly respond to urgent challenges as they surfaced.</p>
<p>Ms Wang was instrumental in launching the Saphan Digital programme which, in partnership with the commerce ministry and industry organizations, equips Thai businesses, NGO&rsquo;s and individuals with digital know-how to maximize their business and employment opportunities. She also was behind a US$800 million (approximately 24 billion Thai Baht) fund, established during the pandemic, to support small businesses by giving them access to finance, ad credits and grants.</p>
<p>Prior to Google, Jackie was General Manager for Commonwealth at McCann Worldgroup where she was responsible for all advertising activities in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan for the GM Chevrolet regional hub. Her resume also includes General Manager for MRM, a digital division within McCann Worldgroup.</p>
<p>Jackie Wang graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Communications. Fluent in Thai, she is an alumna of Ruamrudee International School Bangkok.</p>
