<p>How I've got to where I am today is really beyond my dreams. Who would have thought that a kid who liked to do makeup, would one day become a leading professional makeup artist in Thailand.</p>
<p>I am an only child. So my parents expected a lot from me. My mum had a noodle stall at the school and my dad was an office worker. But we never spent much time together. There were family issues, adult issues between my parents.</p>
<p>But I didn't think that I was a troubled kid. I was still trying to be good and wanted to look after my parents to the best of my ability.</p>

<h2>Becoming a Professional Makeup Artist</h2>
<p>I have been into beauty since I was a child. When I was in Year 8 during a school break, I realized that I had a passion for doing makeup and hairstyling and that I wanted to pursue this as a career. So I asked my mum if I could take a course and she agreed. But because I was very young and still at school, the school&rsquo;s term began half way through the course and I never had the opportunity to complete it.</p>
<p>I started by doing hair curling, perms and hair drying. People said "wait a minute, don&rsquo;t you want to be a makeup artist? Why are you talking about hairdressing?". The truth is that I started out as a hairdresser because, even though I wanted to do makeup, it was quite expensive, given the price of cosmetics. I just didn&rsquo;t have the money to spend on makeup.</p>
<p>So I applied for a job at a hairdresser's instead. I got a straight "no" answer because I was too young. I told my mum this and she said nevermind, she would lend her dressing table. That table was moved to the ground floor and my mum also bought me a shampoo bed.</p>
<p>At that time, the price for cut and dry was around 10-20 Baht, while hair straightening was 150 Baht. I spent the money I earned to attend a makeup course. I might look confident today but back then I used to get really confused about which cosmetics to use. I had so much to learn.</p>
<p>But with experience, getting things wrong and practicing until you get it right, you will begin to get better and improve.</p>
<p>My very first makeup assignment was for a friend who was in a beauty contest at college.</p>
<h2>Follow Your Dreams</h2>
<p>I ran the salon, which I had started when I was 13, after school and during holidays. Then I decided to go to college and study sales. I was lucky to have a tutor there, who was the head of the Thai Dancing Arts Club. She would ask me to do makeup for friends at college fairs. This gave me a chance to practice.</p>
<p>Another turning point was when I was in my third year of my vocational certificate. We had to apply what we had learned in class to actually engage in real world sales. This time I decided to be an intern at cosmetic counters. I phoned the big names, almost all of them, and one-by-one they said they didn't have an intern program.</p>
<p>There was one last number on my list and when I got through, I told them that I had basic makeup skills and wanted to learn as a trainee. I presented myself to the best of my ability. I didn't want to earn any money, I just wanted to do something I loved.</p>
<p>Do you know what they said? They said "OK let's meet" This sentence "OK let's meet" made my day. I was like wow, did they really accept me? I wanted to go and meet them straight away. In the end I did. And they accepted me as a trainee, paying 300 Baht. At the time, I wasn&rsquo;t sure if that was 300 Baht a month, but money wasn&rsquo;t what motivated me for this job.</p>
<p>It was so good that they had agreed to accept me. I still remember that they asked me to meet at Central Chidlom. I didn't even know where Central Chidlom was in Bangkok. When I got there, I was amazed at the luxury and the number of things for sale. I was so excited. It was so different from a local mall near me. My heart fluttered at the sight of the cosmetic counters. This led me into the world of publication.</p>
<h2>Climbing the Ladder to Success</h2>
<p>Another thing that helped me become one of Thailand's top makeup artists is social media. I posted my work on Facebook. At the time Facebook was still dominant, unlike today with Instagram, or IG, taking the lead.</p>
<p>My Career Break Came with an Instagram Message</p>
<p>With IG, I follow quite a few celebrities. Not many were on IG back then though. One day I commented on "Yaya Ying&rsquo;s" Instagram that I wanted to do makeup for her. I didn't know whether she saw it or not until one day, I went to do makeup and hair for "Tak Bongkoj" and ran into Ying.</p>
<p>When I saw her, I said hi and she said that next time she would contact me to do her makeup and hair. I thought to myself that this was too good to be true.</p>
<p>Almost a month went by and then Ying&rsquo;s manager called one day to ask me to do makeup for Ying. I said yes straight away and, on the day, I arrived with all my cosmetics and equipment for hairdressing. Many people knew me as a makeup artist and a hairdresser.</p>
<p>During the break, Ying came to me and asked whether I wanted to go to Cannes with her. I was like "Cannes where?". Did she mean Kanchanaburi? I had no idea!</p>
<p>I didn't think she was serious about taking me to Cannes so I told her that I needed to check my calendar. But really I had no need to check my schedule and could have gone there and then.</p>
<p>I was already imagining what Cannes would be like. I would do the best I could to make her beauty shine. Did you see how Ying looked at the event? Her hair was tied up and I used brown-nude makeup which was offset by Ying&rsquo;s white dress.</p>
<p>The look was so striking and images of her in Cannes were shared on social media. Ying&rsquo;s manager&rsquo;s phone was constantly ringing and I started to get loads of requests to do makeup for all sorts of people and jobs.</p>
<p>I had no idea that this assignment and opportunity, given to me by Ying, would be one of one of my life's most significant turning points.</p>

<p>Pan Pan has an interesting backstory. He was bullied during his school years whilst attending a British International School in Bangkok, which was a challenging time for him. His mother informed him at a young age that she won&rsquo;t leave him any money when she dies, which sparked a realisation in him that he would need to take care of his own future financially.</p>
<p>Pan Pan&rsquo;s journey towards becoming one of the most famous drag queens in Southeast Asia began when he won a competition to see his idol, Lady Gaga, perform in New York. &ldquo;I started my drag career when there was a Lady Gaga competition, and if you dressed up as her and lip synced, you could go to her concert in New York,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>
<p>Winning the exciting competition gave Pan Pan a real sense of direction in life, and he knew he had to keep on developing his skills and talents within drag. &ldquo;When I was in New York and I went to the concert, it was great because my makeup was terrible, my hair was terrible, but I felt so liberated because you got to interact with other people and share this love for a fantasy,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>
<p>Pan Pan finds it strange when people say that drag isn&rsquo;t personal, because to him it really is. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s insane when you go through crazy experiences that make you want to quit drag. There are times when someone would say something to me or they would get upset with me...the only way to get through it besides time and realising that time heals all wounds is to find your relationship with what you love and not let anyone affect what you do because if you really love what you do, no one is going to tell you anything differently for you to change your passion.&rdquo;.</p>
<p>Drag was an unconventional career path, but Pan Pan is nothing if not hard-working and dedicated to following his dream. The journey wasn&rsquo;t always easy for Pan Pan, but through it all, he maintained his passion and love for his craft &ndash; and the dream quickly came together. &ldquo;I know that I was born on this earth to be a drag queen,&ldquo; Pan Pan says, with a passion that shines through every word.</p>
<p>From the start, Pan Pan&rsquo;s alter ego Pangina Heals was a bright spark on the vibrant drag scene of Thailand and Southeast Asia. Pangina Heals quickly became a household name, and garnered millions of fans around the world. Co-host (along with Art Arya) of the hugely popular Drag Race Thailand, Pangina Heals has toured widely in Asia, the US and beyond. Pan Pan has also opened his own cabaret bar in the heart of Bangkok named after his drag persona &ndash; the bar is called Heals, and is a popular spot on the thriving Bangkok nightlife circuit. <p>&ldquo;What better way to learn than by listening to other people who have more experience than you. take everything in, if they have tips, take it in. If you don't know something don't be afraid to ask because it's only going to better yourself. Other people who have been on stage more times than you are likely to give you really great tips that you can apply for yourself,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>
<p>The only way you&rsquo;re going to develop your skills and succeed is by listening to other people and seeing what they do &ndash; that way, you&rsquo;ll gain a better understanding of how the new world around you works and how you can improve on yourself and your talents. &ldquo;The art of drag is the art of transformation, which means anyone and everyone can do it,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>
<p>This first tip is also about continually reflecting on the work you&rsquo;ve been doing and how well you&rsquo;re performing, so you can spot any potential areas for improvement.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Every single time I performed, I knew that I was getting better and better because I watch myself back and I know where to improve.&rdquo; No one's ever born perfect &ndash; you&rsquo;re never gonna come out of the womb being like &ldquo;whoo, I am the best performer ever&rdquo;. This is life, honey &ndash; it&rsquo;s always about learning,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>

<p>The second tip is about honing your craft and getting better and better with time. No matter what field you&rsquo;re in, you won&rsquo;t be able to succeed unless you&rsquo;ve worked hard at becoming the best that you can be. This includes doing your homework and staying committed over time.</p>
<p>As Pan Pan says, &ldquo;You have to practice, practice, practice. If you're going to do a performance and you keep practicing your makeup in the run up to the event, as your skills progress, you&rsquo;re going to look more beautiful and more polished. If you're going to do a dance number, the more you practice the better you&rsquo;re going to be at the choreography &ndash; you&rsquo;re going to be more crisp and more sharp. If you're going to perform a song, you have to know the words.&rdquo;.</p>
<p>The old adage is true &ndash; practice does, in fact, make perfect, and the more time you can spend preparing and perfecting your work the better. &ldquo;For me, I listen to the song over 1000 times when I'm going to do a lip syncing performance, because then I know what action I'm going to do with each syllable. So practice everything as much as possible, so you can get that much closer to perfection,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>
<h3>3. Preparation</h3>
<p>As most drag queens know, drag is all about the performance &ndash; which is why good preparation is key. For Pan Pan, this is about preparing for each specific stage you&rsquo;re going to perform on or event you&rsquo;ll be performing at.</p>
<p>&ldquo;If you're going to do a performance, you have to do blocking for the light, prepare for the sound, and make sure that the song is sent to the DJ correctly,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s really important that you take the time and effort to prepare for each performance, because you do not want to be stuck on stage like a deer in headlights while something goes terribly wrong, because you failed to prepare properly.</p>
<h3>4. Professionalism</h3>
<p>Pan Pan&rsquo;s next tip is about professionalism. Being professional and acting appropriately is hugely important in our business lives.</p>
<p>&ldquo;You have to respect yourself and respect other people by being on time &ndash; this is rule number one in any kind of business interaction because time is money. Don't waste my money and other people's money &ndash; this is the only way you can turn your passion into a business venture,&rdquo; Pan Pan says.</p>
<p>No matter what field you&rsquo;re in, it&rsquo;s crucial that you behave in a professional manner. Like Pan Pan says, this includes showing up on time and being well-prepared for the work you&rsquo;re about to take on. It also involves being professional in your communication with other people, and showing the best version of yourself to everyone you interact with.</p>
<p>5. Let it go and forgive yourself</p>
<p>No matter how hard you work and how well you prepare, at some point in our lives and careers, we&rsquo;ll all have something go wrong. When that happens, it&rsquo;s best to not beat yourself up about it &ndash; just learn from the experience, then let it go and forgive yourself for what went wrong. None of us are perfect, and every mistake is actually a learning experience, so it&rsquo;s best to take a deep breath and just let it go.</p>
<p>As Pan Pan says, &ldquo;Sometimes things don't go according to plan and all you can do is just to forgive yourself. If you fall down, get back up and keep going because you know what &ndash; sometimes you just can't control certain things and the worst thing to do is for you to blame yourself, so forgive yourself and remember that tomorrow is a new day!&rdquo;.</p>

<p>Whatever our role in life, we are almost certainly likely to be working with other people at some point and it can be very important to understand what makes people tick. Salespeople and marketers, for example, need to understand what people might be thinking and how they might react to certain words and phrases or propositions.</p>
<p>Another example is acting. Actors need to be in tune with the audience to portray the right emotions at the right times. Not only do actors need to be skilled in hitting the target emotionally, but writers and directors also need to make sure that their creations have the &lsquo;human&rsquo; touch; that people can relate to them and feel the same emotions that characters are feeling.</p>
<p>This is where the role of an acting coach comes in. We spoke with well-respected acting coach Kru Ngor Rossukon about acting, and how it can give you an advantage when it comes to understanding people.</p>
<h2>Learning to Understand People</h2>
<p>Kru Ngor told us that one of the biggest challenges she faces is when writers, producers, or actors have difficulty understanding human nature. These people will often have lives that are going smoothly and have never been in the shoes of somebody who is struggling. The result is characters and situations that audiences cannot relate with, causing the audience to put up mental barriers and disconnect with the characters.</p>
<p>Kru Ngor tells us that although many people believe acting involves wearing a mask &ndash; it actually involves removing a mask you&rsquo;re already wearing.</p>
<p>Actors need to learn to examine their own actions and motivations. They need to become honest about their own behaviors and once they&rsquo;ve achieved this, they can begin to learn more about themselves and other people. It&rsquo;s not so much that actors need to fake being somebody else when playing a character, but more that they need to truthfully portray that character in certain situations and this involves learning how to understand people.</p>
<p>These skills can be applied to life away from acting in numerous ways, including:</p>
<h2>Seeing Different Perspectives</h2>
<p>Acting encourages us to look deeper into other peoples&rsquo; lives and experiences. It helps us to see that many people do have very different lives from us and that their experiences are likely to give them different perspectives to our own. Acting effectively helps us to see the world through other people&rsquo;s eyes, and understand why and how they might have different thoughts to us on certain subjects. It can be so authentic that some actors need to &lsquo;de-role&rsquo; after performing, while studies have also shown that the brain behaves differently when people are in character.</p>
<p>Being able to see different perspectives can be very beneficial to us when it comes to certain real-life situations. For example, it might help us to close a deal, or settle a customer. Being able to see things from a different perspective might also help with disagreements in relationships, and help make relationships a lot more pleasant and enjoyable for all parties.</p>
<h2>Listening</h2>
<p>Too many of us are guilty of not actually listening to what other people are saying to us. It can be all so easy for us to develop pre-conceptions of what people are likely to say or think, and act on those instead of what is really being said. Actors, however, are trained to listen more closely so they can learn how to understand people. They are also taught to look for mannerisms and behavioral clues that might tell them about a person&rsquo;s emotional state.</p>
<p>Listening properly helps to significantly improve peoples&rsquo; communications skills. Reading body language also helps actors to understand people better than they would otherwise be able to, adding a further boost to their ability to communicate with other people. Enhanced communication skills can help us improve many aspects of our lives including personal and professional relationships, while we will also become a lot more skilled at problem-solving.</p>
<h2>Self Confidence</h2>
<p>It takes nerves to get up on a stage and act in front of other people and just the thought of doing so will be nerve-racking to a lot of people. The more somebody gets used to being in front of an audience, however, the more they will get used to it and their self-confidence will gradually grow. Even otherwise timid people can eventually begin to come out of their shells.</p>
<p>Confidence isn&rsquo;t only beneficial for actors &ndash; it is also beneficial in other areas of life. Gaining confidence in social situations will help improve a lot of people&rsquo;s quality of life, while it can also encourage people to go for professional opportunities they might otherwise have passed on. Although confidence needs to be tempered with a degree of modesty, it&rsquo;s something that can help people succeed.</p>
<h2>Adaptability</h2>
<p>Actors need to be flexible. Not only do they need to be able to transform themselves into new characters, but they often also need to be able to adapt to situations in real-time as they develop. They will often need to think quickly and improvise or adapt to feedback and these are skills that take practice to perfect &ndash; and acting provides the opportunity to practice. This adaptability can be very useful in other areas of life, such as when something doesn&rsquo;t go to plan at work. While everybody else is panicking and not sure of what to do, actors can put their adaptability skills into practice to help ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible.</p>

<p>Acting is a skill that&rsquo;s developed over many years in most cases, but it&rsquo;s not only beneficial on the stage. <h2>The Role of Music Director</h2>
<p>Many don't know what a music director does. A music director has to see the whole picture of the piece of work or a concert, from start to finish. From song selection, song positioning, and arrangements So that each song is interesting and impressive for the audience.</p>
<p>Today, I will share what it means to be a music director and suggestions on how to create something outstanding and unique, for all music enthusiasts.</p>
<h2>My First Notes</h2>
<p>When I started to play music, I didn't even have money to learn it. I learned from my dad. Dad was my first teacher. He would sing for me and say this is the sound of music. Then he would ask me to try drumming with him. I used anything I could find, water bottles, a clothes basket, plates, and bowls. I arranged them in a row and drummed.</p>
<p>My dad would then teach me the patterns of rhythms like 'Beguine', 'Cha-Cha-Cha', or 'Bolero'. They were the folks' rhythms. That was how I learned. I did this every day and night because we didn't have any toys at home. Our house had nothing to boast about.</p>
<h2>Music is My Life</h2>
<p>After I had been able to play music, my dad set up a folk band for me to gain experience. The only three instruments were drum, bass, and organ. We played at housewarming ceremonies, top-knot cutting ceremonies, temple fairs, or friends' birthday parties.</p>
<p>I continued gathering experience. Until one day, I had this urge to try playing various types of music in a day.</p>
<h2>Towards Becoming a Professional Musician</h2>
<p>And when I had more experience from playing all kinds of music, I had an idea of sharing this with the general public. I wanted to let the public decide whether the songs we play or ideas we have can be successful. So I started rearranging and covering songs from various artists. I changed chords and rhythms. Then I asked people in the band whether they'd like to try them out. And I would write the chords for them.</p>
<p>All in all, it was quite unexpected. People liked and accepted our style of music. This spread by word of mouth from one artist to another, that if they wanted to have a band or to create songs, try letting Neung do it and see how they come about.</p>
<h2>5 Keys to Becoming a Great Music Director</h2>
<p>And today I will share five techniques to make you become a good music director.</p>
<h3>1. Focus on Listening</h3>
<p>Firstly, listening is crucial. If you practice a lot but don't listen, you won't have imaginations or ideas to work or create something new. Here is an example, this is the accordion, the instrument I learned to play as a child. An accordion is a Western instrument if it is played a Western song or style, It will have the Western flair. But if we adapt it to play a Thai traditional song, the tone and method will be different. Here we go. This is from the same instrument, the accordion. If we listen more, we will be able to use our imagination more. We will have ideas how to use our instruments to play various kinds of music or how to apply them to different songs.</p>
<h3>2. Strong Fundamentals Make Strong Solos</h3>
<p>Secondly, a good solo comes from good basics. Practicing the basics slowly, always with the melody. Here is an example. When I practice, I do it very slowly, to see how both hands coordinate. And balance the weight between both hands. We can do a solo with these. Everything comes from practice. Everything I play comes from the basics.</p>
<h3>3. Unleash Your Imagination in Your Work</h3>
<p>Thirdly, imagination is very important. When I work, when I have an idea or an initiative, it is usually the time when I am alone. I have to work alone in a studio. I cannot ask anyone or another musician to be with me all the time.</p>
<p>For example, if I need to work on a chorus, a film's or a series' scores, you will need to realize that these songs mostly use string instruments. You will need to imagine an orchestra in front of you.</p>
<p>Now you see, when you imagine string instruments or an orchestra, you need to balance your sounds, hands, and feelings to be clear how your music will come about.</p>
<h3>4. Bring out the Uniqueness of Artists</h3>

<p>What you may not know is that when you see an artist working on a certain genre or style, they may be different at concerts. You may observe that everyone has their own tricks. So their fans can see that they have broader talent than what we can see on YouTube or CDs. This is how you learn about artists.</p>
<h3>5. Understand Timing with Band Members</h3>
<p>And lastly, what every music director should have is the ability to know the timings of the band. You need to know when is the time for a member to perform. Like this song, the violin is to do a solo, every other instrument needs to quiet down. Even vocalists will follow the music director whether to add anything to a line, or to just have the piano and vocalist.</p>
<p>Hence, we communicate within the band. We share our skills and do not compete. We don't compete for solos.</p>
<p>The most important duty of a music director is to look at the band and strike a balance to make a harmonious piece of music. These are what make a good music director.</p>
<p>For me, it's easy to play an instrument well. The difficult part is how to also create a good image of the band. How to make a vocalist look good. How to make the audience like you. That's hard.</p>
