Mew Suppasit: His Path To Success

Today, he is a very popular actor – but Mew didn’t always have the confidence to get up in front of an audience on stage and in front of cameras. Mew was an introvert when he was young. Though he carried a dream of acting and a career in music, fear held him back until he was talent spotted one day. Though it was clear that Mew was talented, the first few years were a struggle – he wasn’t able to book any jobs, but kept working on his craft and spent two years at drama school.

Upon finishing drama school, the tide turned for Mew – he began booking almost every job he auditioned for. A period of huge growth was beginning for this ambitious young actor, and he was able to achieve his BSc, a Masters degree and a PhD. Alongside his academic success, Mew also found the time to release hit songs and act in movies and TV shows.

His career has gone from strength to strength since, and this Thai and Chinese superstar now has a legion of fans across the world. In fact, Mew is the first Thai male to grace the cover of the hugely popular Elle Thailand magazine, and he’s also the first man to be on the cover of the exclusive magazine Cosmopolitan Indonesia. But Mew isn’t just focused on growing his career – he’s also a very socially conscious and responsible person, who wants to help others. In September 2020, Mew took part in a TED talk focused on self-esteem and knowing oneself, hoping to establish important dialogues in society.

In his powerful video talk for CI Talks, Mew shares 5 of his most important insights and tips that helped him to achieve his dream of becoming a famous actor. “Many people might think that a career in acting is very easy, but the truth is, an acting career is much more than just ‘role play’,” Mew says. “In English, acting is known as acting. However, in Thai, acting has a negative connotation. It can make one think, “Oh, it’s just a performance, it’s not real.” But the truth is, acting is doing, becoming the character that you are given.”

If you’re an aspiring actor or artist, it’s important that you create a solid foundation for yourself by going to drama school, have professional headshots taken, and are focused on networking and gaining as much experience as you can at a young age. However, that’s not all – as Mew knows very well, you also need to have the right mindset if you’d like to make it in the entertainment industry.

“The question that I get asked most often is “What is mindset?” Mindset is a way of thinking or your perspective regarding a topic or situation. For an actor or artist, I feel that their mindset is very important,” Mew shares. “They need to constantly improve themselves, always willing to learn, ready to be creative, look for ways to increase their quality of acting, improve their old skills and learn new ones. All of this is so their fans can view the best works possible.”

Mew believes maintaining focus on growing and developing yourself and your skills is key if you want to make it in the acting industry. “One of the trending words right now is ‘Growth Mindset.’ It is progressive thinking. For example, when you face a problem, you don’t look at it as a problem, but as a challenge,” Mew says. “You are not a full glass, or sometimes when you think your glass is full, just empty the contents into a bigger container and you will no longer be a full glass. This leaves room for more knowledge to enter. I feel that an artist is a creator of works. So, if you keep improving your work, you are doing your job as an artist. I believe that people can survive on their own ability,” he explains.

Mew is ready to share some of his main insights and lessons with the world. “Other than taking acting classes, there’s a lot more to it that you don’t know. The experiences that I’ve gained, the mistakes that I’ve learned from, as well as things that I’ve done to improve,” Mew says. “Based on my 11 years of experience as an actor and artist, I have 5 key points to tell everyone.” Here, you can reap the benefits of Mew’s experience and learn more about how you can build a successful career as an actor.

Mew’s top 5 tips:

Let’s take a closer look at these most valuable insights Mew offers us, and see what he has to say about each point.

Mew’s first tip is around open-mindedness and observation skills. “I can tell you that to observe and be open minded is very important to being an actor because in order to act a certain role, you will need to know the details of that character. You will need to act and become someone who is different from who you truly are. Therefore, being open minded is very important,” he says.

If you have a dream of being an actor, the first thing you need to do is to broaden your mind and be open to new and different possibilities. You can’t tap into a character’s reality if you’re blocking your own way. “An actor has to be open minded. If not, and we have some kind of prejudice towards the character, or towards ourselves or the people around us, it will block us from seeing that character’s reality. So, observation and open-mindedness are very important. They make us better understand our own feelings, and other things as well,” Mew says.

The second sage piece of advice Mew can offer aspiring actors and singers is to be conscious and present in the moment. As Mew says, “It is living in the present. When you live a normal life, you are your true self. We know who we’re talking to, what we’re doing, whose face we’re looking at, how we feel towards that person, and what we feel. These are the things that we have to use for acting too. Living in the actually being conscious.”

Without living your life and being present in those human moments we all experience, you won’t be able to gain important experiences and wisdom that you can channel into your acting. Living a rich, full life will be hugely beneficial towards building a successful career as an actor, since you will be more open to life’s lessons and opportunities.

Mew’s third tip is to work hard and do your homework. “When we receive the script, what an actor should do is to study their role outside the script. That’s because sometimes we may have to act as a 25 year old character, but we don’t know what that character has been through in the past 25 years. Sometimes we’re not told what his family is like. These are things that we have to do, our homework,” Mew says. “We have to study how he’s been brought up and in what kind of family, what his family’s like, what he’s been through, what complexes he has in the past that results in the present complex”.

According to Mew, this self study is very important for adding important depth to your performance as an actor. “These are details that, the more you know, the easier it’ll be for your acting. When you get in the scene, you’ll immediately get into character because you’ll have all the details in your head. It’s a memory that you created for this certain character, and you’ll be able to link it with the words in your head easily.”

For Mew, doing your homework and knowing your character completely is a key aspect of achieving success in acting. “The most important thing is the general detail. If everyone can practice this, it’ll definitely help in your acting career,” he says. “These are things that you can do as homework, and you can discuss it with the director – then it’ll enable you to create a much more detailed character. Once you hear the word ‘action’, you can jump into that character very easily.”

Prior to his successful career in the entertainment industry, Mew worked as a teaching assistant. This experience taught him valuable lessons that he now applies to his career. “I have seen that many times, students don’t dare to ask questions,” Mew says. “I told them, please ask, because it’ll help when you’re in doubt about anything. After asking, it’d make things very clear and you’ll know the answers to your questions.”

The same thing applies to all areas of business, and also the entertainment industry. If you’re getting your start as an actor, and there’s something you’re confused about – it’s always best to ask in a polite way, so that you can get your answer and perform better in the role. “There’s no such thing as a stupid question. So if you have any questions, please do ask,” Mew says.

For his final tip to any aspiring actors, Mew shares some inspirational words of wisdom. In fact, this has been his motto since he was a young boy: “When there’s a will, there’s a way.” For Mew, this powerful motto is about the fact that we can truly achieve almost anything as long as we try.

“The trick is to put an effort in the right direction. It will help us reach the goal faster. Everybody has his or her own way of achieving a goal, it’s not the same for everyone,” Mew says. “You have to find a way that matches you best, so that you’d reach your goal successfully and quickly.”

Mew’s final piece of advice to us is: “Try listing what are the things that you have to do. Sometimes, when you make the list, and you finally reach your goal, it really fulfills something within you”. He also suggests looking to the past to realise how strong you already are and how much you’ve grown. “I’d also like you to try thanking yourself for getting through everything until today. There’s a lot of things a person can go through,” Mew says. “Lastly, who is always with you? Of course, the one who has always been with you since you were born is yourself. I can tell you that if you thank yourself, you’ll be able to see how much you have improved and how much you have grown.”

As we can see, building a successful career in acting can be a big challenge. It requires an open mind, a commitment to being conscious and present in all aspects of everyday life, and a true dedication to the craft. In order to make it as a successful actor the way Mew has, you’ll need to do your homework, study your roles carefully, and you need to not be afraid of asking questions and putting yourself out there. More than anything, you need a huge amount of dedication and ambition, because, as Mew says, "when there is a will, there is a way"!
